City Of Yuma Road Report, May 10

32nd Street reconstruction, Avenue A area – closure on Tuesday On Tuesday, May 15, the south leg of the intersection of Avenue A and 32nd Street will be closed from 5 a.m. through the end of the business day. Motorists will need to detour using 8th Avenue and 36th Street. Work on this project is currently concentrated on the intersection of 32nd Street and Avenue A. One lane of traffic will be open in each direction through the intersection. To accommodate left turns at this intersection, traffic signals will run green for only one direction at a time; this could cause backups and delays at this intersection. Duration of this phase of work is estimated at three weeks. During this time a temporary closure of Avenue A south of 32nd is planned – once in place motorists will be asked to detour using 8th Avenue and 36th Street.

24th Street/County 10th Street closure, Avenue 5E – Yuma County Yuma County road maintenance will require a closure of City 24th Street / County 10th Street between Avenue 3E and Avenue 5E that is currently set to take place during daytime hours on Monday, May 14. Westbound traffic will be diverted north up Avenue 5E to 16th Street/Highway 95. Through traffic between 3E and Araby Road should use Interstate 8 or 16th Street.

Engler Avenue Water Main Extension, 16th St. to Calle Chapalla Work is under way on the waterline going in under Engler Avenue between 16th Street and Calle Chappalla, which is near Engler’s southern end north of Interstate 8. Work will take place mostly on the east side right of way along Engler. Traffic is reduced to one lane in the work zone, with flagmen on site to assist. Access to the neighborhood will be maintained at all times.

City of Yuma street maintenance City workers will conduct crack seal operations the week of Monday, May 14 in the following locations: • Parkway Place subdivision • Las Casitas subdivision • 28th Street from Avenue B to 33rd Drive • 33rd Drive from 24th Street to 28th Street Avenue C, 8th Street to 1st Street and Figueroa – Yuma County 1st Street has new pavement between Figueroa Avenue and Dale Street, but is otherwise restricted to Riverside Drive. Through traffic should use Avenue B and 8th Street to connect between Avenue C and 1st Street. The contractor is installing a new waterline at 1st Street, between Riverside Drive and Figueroa Avenue and connect to the existing 12″ waterline at the intersection of Figueroa Avenue. In addition, the contractor will be removing and replacing the pavement as to realign the new roadway on this segment. In the overall project, Yuma County is widening Avenue C from 8th Street to Figueroa Street and 1st Street. This will include placing a City Of Yuma water main down the middle of the road. Right now the heavy work is between 8th Street and 5th Street; a temporary surface is in place with narrow lanes. Lane restrictions continue up to Riverside Drive. The project work flow is moving north from 8th Street toward 1st Street. Be prepared for sections of Avenue C to be closed at times during this project. Follow detour signs or just plan ahead and use Avenue B instead.

City Of Yuma Road Report, May 3

32nd Street reconstruction, Avenue A to west of Avenue B Work on this project is currently concentrated on the intersection of 32nd Street and Avenue A.

West of the Avenue A intersection, 32nd Street has two lanes of traffic open completely in each direction, with median/turn lane open as well.

Engler Avenue Water Main Extension, 16th St. to Calle Chapalla Beginning Monday, May 7, work will commence on the waterline going in under Engler Avenue between 16th Street and Calle Chappalla, which is near Engler’s southern end north of Interstate 8. Work will take place mostly on the east side right of way along Engler, so one lane of traffic will continue to flow in each direction, with flagmen on site to assist when needed. Access to the neighborhood will be maintained at all times.

City of Yuma street maintenance City workers will conduct crack seal operations the week of Monday, May 7 in the following locations: Parkway Place subdivision Las Casitas subdivision 28th Street from Avenue B to 33rd Drive 33rd Drive from 24th Street to 28th Street

Avenue C, 8th Street to 1st Street and Figueroa – Yuma County 1st Street has been closed to through traffic from Figueroa Avenue to Riverside Drive.

Yuma Among Few Cities Named ‘Playful’ a Sixth Straight Time

Organization dedicated to play lauds Yuma’s commitment to children

Yuma, Ariz. – Six for six.

In baseball, that’s a rare feat. In basketball, it’s a good day at the free throw line. In hockey, it’s, like, a double hat trick or something. (In football, it’s merely a competent extra-point kicker – so thank goodness it’s not football season.)

So when the City of Yuma was named a Playful City USA on Tuesday – making it one of only 19 cities to have earned that distinction for all six years of the program’s history – there was a justifiable sense of accomplishment at City Hall.

“We continue to find ways to improve or enhance our programs,” said Director of Parks and Recreation Becky Chavez. “One example is learning from what we did the previous two years with our summer camp programs and opening them up to more children this summer. Camp Awesome is a great incorporation of fun with healthy messages that’s organized to additionally serve as an affordable summer day-care opportunity for parents.”

The Playful City USA program is presented by the Humana Foundation, and Playful City designations are awarded by KaBOOM!, a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing play opportunities for children. Recognizing both the important role that play factors into brain development and the fact that today’s children spend less time playing outside than the previous generation, the Playful City USA program encourages cities and towns to share ideas, concepts and programs to increase play opportunities for children.

Yuma is among 213 cities and towns named a Playful City USA for 2012. The distinction makes the City eligible for grants of $15,000, $20,000 or $30,000 through the Let’s Play partnership led by Dr Pepper Snapple Group. Grant recipients will be announced in June.

“Some of the most innovative concepts and cost-effective programs are being developed in Playful City USA communities,” said Darrell Hammond, founder and CEO of KaBOOM! “Cities like Yuma are key allies in the fight to combat the play deficit and serve as outstanding role models for government and community leaders across the country.”

KaBOOM! also selected Yuma for its outstanding dedication to play through facilities improvements such as the playground shade structures the City has erected over playgrounds the last several years and through programs such as the highly attended Day For Kids – Come Out and Play.

“Yuma created playspace community volunteer projects that engaged citizens while improving the quality of play for children,” said KaBOOM! in a news release.

Other Arizona cities and towns receiving Playful City USA status this year include Phoenix, Tucson, Buckeye, Casa Grande, Chandler, Coolidge, Gilbert, Mesa and Oro Valley.

About KaBOOM!

Headquartered in Washington, D.C., KaBOOM! is a national non-profit organization dedicated to saving play. Through community building, the organization is focused on giving every child in America a great place to play within walking distance. Since 1996, KaBOOM! has used its innovative community-build model to bring together business and community interests to construct more than 2,000 new playgrounds, skate parks, sports fields and ice rinks across North America. They have mapped more than 89,000 places to play. KaBOOM! also offers a variety of resources, including an online community, free online trainings, grants, publications and the KaBOOM! National Campaign for Play, which includes Playful City USA and Playmakers – a national network of individual advocates for play. KaBOOM! also has offices in Chicago and San Mateo, Calif.
The City of Yuma is a full service council/manager form of government, serving nearly 100,000 full-time City residents, the 215,000 residents of the Yuma metropolitan service area and 100,000 winter guests.

City Of Yuma Road Report, April 26

32nd Street reconstruction, Avenue A to west of Avenue B

Beginning Monday, work on this project will focus on the intersection of 32nd Street and Avenue A. One lane of traffic will be open in each direction through the intersection. To accommodate left turns at this intersection, traffic signals will run green for only one direction at a time; this could cause backups and delays at this intersection. Duration of this phase of work is estimated at three weeks. West of the intersection, pavement was wrapping up this week from Avenue A to the East Main Canal bridge, and 32nd Street is open completely between Avenue B and the East Main Canal, with all lanes now open on both streets.

City of Yuma street maintenance

City workers will conduct crack seal operations the week of Monday, April 30 in the following locations: Las Casitas subdivision Livingston Ranch subdivision Parkway Place subdivision 28th Street from Avenue B to 33rd Drive 40th Street from Avenue C to Avenue B-1/2

Avenue C, 8th Street to 1st Street and Figueroa – Yuma County

1st Street has been closed to through traffic from Figueroa Avenue to Riverside Drive.

Upcoming

Engler Avenue Water Main Extension, 16th St. to Calle Chapalla – Meeting on Tuesday

A neighborhood meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 1 in the training room of the Public Works Services building on the corner of 1st Avenue and 14th Street to discuss a waterline going in under Engler Avenue between 16th Street and Calle Chappalla. Members of the public, especially neighbors of that subdivision, are invited to learn about the project and ask questions of the contractor or the project manager.

City Of Yuma Road Report, April 19

32nd Street Avenue A to Avenue B City crack seal maintenance in Las Casitas, Livingston Ranch Avenue C, 8th Street to 1st Street -1st Street closure Dust control spray Slurry Seal program – related closures Neighborhood Meeting – Engler Avenue water main extension

32nd Street reconstruction, Avenue A to west of Avenue B

Work is now complete on 32nd Street between Avenue B and the East Main Canal, with all lanes now open on both streets. A new traffic signal has been installed at 32nd Street and 21st Drive. East of the canal, 32nd Street is narrowed to one lane in each direction, with speed limits reduced to 25 mph and most left turns prohibited until just east of Avenue A. However, left turns have been restored at 15th Avenue for ease of access to the Dunes subdivision. Paving will take place April 23-25 on the south side of 32nd Street from the East Main Canal bridge to Avenue A. Visitors to Desert Hills Par 3 (formerly Arroyo Dunes) Golf Course should plan ahead and approach from the west (Avenue B or 21st Drive).

City of Yuma street maintenance

City workers will conduct crack seal operations the week of Monday, April 23 in the Las Casitas and Livingston Ranch subdivisions.

Avenue C, 8th Street to 1st Street and Figueroa – Yuma County

1st Street has been closed to through traffic from Figueroa Avenue to Riverside Drive.

City of Yuma dust control spray

Next week, City of Yuma Streets Division will apply magnesium chloride spray in several locations around the City of Yuma on April 25-26. Magnesium Chloride is a dust control measure used on undeveloped roads, alleys and City rights of way. Affected areas will be notified 24 hours in advance.

City of Yuma slurry seal program concludes

The City is concluding its spring slurry seal program following completion of lane striping on sealed streets, which takes place Thursday and Friday.

Upcoming

Engler Avenue Water Main Extension, 16th St. to Calle Chapalla
