Thursday, March 11, 10:00am-noon — The C-SPAN Civics Bus is on the road to Yuma, AZ!  The 45-foot mobile production studio and demonstration center will travel to Yuma to share C-SPAN’s education and civic resources with library visitors at the Foothills Library, 13226 E. South Frontage Rd. With new interior features that include the latest television production equipment, the C-SPAN Civics Bus allows students, teachers and other visitors the chance to tour the bus and learn about the many resources C-SPAN offers, including the network’s education website, C-SPAN Classroom (www.c-spanclassroom.org ), a free membership service for educators with downloadable video clips; the C-SPAN Video library (www.c-spanarchives.org  ); and C-SPAN’s television coverage of federal government including events on healthcare, the economy, and more.  The Civics Bus will move on to the Wellton Library, 28790 San Jose Ave., from 12:30-2:30pm.

Saturday, March 13, 10:30am — Local authors Shirley Woodhouse Murdock and James A. Gillaspie will discuss their book “The Longest Flight: Yuma’s Quest for the Future” at the Wellton Library, 28790 San Jose Avenue. The book chronicles an endurance flight undertaken in 1949 by Bob Woodhouse (Murdock’s brother) and Woody Jongeward to entice the military to keep the U.S. Army Yuma Test Branch (now Yuma Proving Ground) open and to reopen the World War II Army air base (now Marine Corps Air Station Yuma). The aviators set a new record by staying airborne in the City of Yuma for 1,124 hours. A brief documentary produced by KAET/Channel 8 and Arizona State University will also be shown. Saturday, March 13, 11:00am — Yuma County Sheriff Posse will be raising money for St. Jude’s Children Hospital, by inviting riders and their horses to the West Wetlands Park. For a small donation you can ride with the posse members, with water stops along the way. Burgers and hotdogs will be available for purchase following the ride. Arizona Western College is now accepting applications for their upcoming Law Enforcement Training Academy that begins August 12, 2010 and runs two semesters.  Applications are available in the Public Safety Institute (HS 107).  The application deadline is May 5, 2010.  The Public Safety Institute office is open Monday through Thursday from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. Until passes are gone … Volunteers who help save the Territorial Prison can receive a Give a Day Get a Day pass to Disneyland or Disney World.  Must pre-register at www.disney.go.com complete the form and confirm a specific date and time to volunteer. More info at Heritage Area 373-5198.

Through March 29, K.I.D.S. Cuddlekit Closet — This local non-profit group is selling 6 different commemorative prints of the prison and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the prison. Photographer Julie Evans is donating the photographs for this project. K.I.D.S. recently authored and published a book that includes a page about the prison. Tech Prep and AWC have partnered together to provide local high school students from Yuma and La Paz Counties the opportunity to explore and participate in interactive activities and breakout sessions during this conference. The goal of the conference is to bring down barriers which may prevent someone from pursuing a particular career because of their gender.  Breakout sessions for males may include Hospitality, Massage Therapy, Nursing and Paralegal.  Females will participate in sessions such as Automotive, Construction Trades, Public Safety and Welding.
