The Piano in a Factory China / 2010 / Drama /Mandarin w/ English subtitles / 100 min; Synopsis – When Chen’s estranged wife reappears asking for a divorce and custody of their daughter, the musician girl decides she will live with whoever can provide her with a piano. Chen’s struggle thus begins. When efforts to borrow money and even steal a piano fail, Chen concocts a preposterous plan – he’ll make a piano from scratch! He persuades a bunch of reluctant, but loyal, misfit friends to help him forge the instrument in a derelict factory from a heap of scrap steel. Though crude in design and tune, the factory piano awaits its first and final performance from his little girl.

Fridays, January 13-February 24 – The Yuma County Health Services District will offer Prenatal Classes for pregnant women of all ages at Yuma County Libraries. There is no charge to attend courtesy of a grant from First Things First. Future fathers and support people for those who are pregnant are also encouraged to attend. The Prenatal Classes are part of the Maternal Child Health Program, which focuses on topics such as importance of prenatal care, nutrition, reducing stress, what should be avoided during pregnancy, stages of labor, position of labor, breast feeding, and infant care. Saturday, January 14, 8:00am-noon – Yuma’s Household Hazardous Waste program will hold its next quarterly collection event at the City of Yuma North Public Works Yard, 265 W. 13th St. (13th Street between 4th Avenue and 1st Avenue). Open to all City residents for no charge, the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) program is the safest way to dispose of products such as unwanted corrosive, flammable, toxic or reactive material used in your home, car or truck, garden and lawn. Additionally, it is an opportunity to safely dispose of and/or recycle materials that are no longer needed or wanted within the home. Recycling bins remain available year-round for residents to drop off aluminum cans, metal items, cardboard material, paper and clear plastic. The bins, 13th Street at 2nd Avenue and at 45th Avenue and 17th Street, are open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, to all Yuma County residents. Future HHW dates are April 14, 2012, 8 a.m. to noon ; July 14, 2012, 7 to 11 a.m. ; Oct. 3, 2012, 8 a.m. to noon.

Sunday, January 15, 9:00am-1:00pm – Sponsored by Arizona Historical Societ, this irrigation system tour starts at the Colorado River siphon in Yuma and goes east to Laguna Dam, the first dam built on the Colorado. Any vehicle can make the trip. Laguna Dam was started in 1906 and finished in 1909, with a canal built along the California side of the river to bring irrigation water to the Yuma Valley, west of Yuma. Join us on the 100th anniversary of the siphon, which made possible the first successful irrigation in the Yuma Valley. Now through January 25 – The Stewart Vincent Wolfe Creative Playground at West Wetlands Park will be closed for repair and maintenance.  All other playgrounds at West Wetlands Park will remain open.

The Main Library, 2951 S. 21st Drive, has most tax forms available. A list of income tax resources will be available in English and Spanish. Forms and instructions are also available online at www.azdor.gov (Arizona) and www.irs.gov (Federal). The Main Library has an Arizona Reproducible Forms Book available to make photocopies. Library staff will assist with Internet searches for forms or instructions; however, library personnel are not trained in tax matters, and therefore cannot advise as to which forms to use.

Saturday, April 14, 8:00am-noon – Yuma’s Household Hazardous Waste program will hold its next quarterly collection event at the City of Yuma North Public Works Yard, 265 W. 13th St. (13th Street between 4th Avenue and 1st Avenue). Open to all City residents for no charge, the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) program is the safest way to dispose of products such as unwanted corrosive, flammable, toxic or reactive material used in your home, car or truck, garden and lawn. Additionally, it is an opportunity to safely dispose of and/or recycle materials that are no longer needed or wanted within the home. Recycling bins remain available year-round for residents to drop off aluminum cans, metal items, cardboard material, paper and clear plastic. The bins, 13th Street at 2nd Avenue and at 45th Avenue and 17th Street, are open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, to all Yuma County residents. Future HHW dates are July 14, 2012, 7 to 11 a.m. ; Oct. 3, 2012, 8 a.m. to noon.
